Il Civettaio – Sangiovese – 2019

The Story:  What can we say about this wine that hasn’t already been said? When we first met Gregorio, I asked him where in France he was from… and he is still talking to me to this day!  After the filming for the TV show finished, I went to see Gregorio and he presented me with his wines. We were drinking the 2013 vintage of the Sangiovese at the time, and I was knocked off my feet by the quality and flavours of his wines – the Sangiovese the most.  The 2013 vintage had this insane kind of aniseed taste at the end, it was light, yet stacked with flavour and acidity.   I took a bottle home and sat watching Skull Island on my laptop, eating pizza and pouring the wine into my glass.  I was so engrossed in the movie that I picked up the bottle to pour (yet) another glass and realised the wine was finished.  Now, I love a drink but I can’t tell you the last time that happened to me. I was genuinely shocked the wine was all gone. It was just so unbelievably drinkable. And that’s one of Gregorio’s main ‘philosophies’ for his wines; drinkability.   Skip a couple of vintages and we are back here with an absolute smasher again with this, the 2016. Not only did it scoop the ‘Back to Nature’ award at the Peoples Choice Wine awards in 2020, it is also listed at a local fine dining restaurant.   The only thing that is marmite about this wine, is the label.
